Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa
Begin your day with a pick-up from your hotel in Cairo and embark on a 3-hour drive to Alexandria. Explore the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, one of Alexandria's most fascinating ancient sites. The necropolis, a mix of Pharaonic, Hellenistic, and Roman styles, dates back to the 2nd century AD. Descend the circular staircase into the underground tombs, which feature a unique blend of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman art. The site includes several sarcophagi, statues, and a central burial chamber. The catacombs were used as a burial site until the 4th century and were rediscovered in 1900.
Pompey's Pillar
Next, visit Pompey's Pillar, a towering granite column that stands as a symbol of Roman triumph in Alexandria. Despite its name, the column has no connection to the Roman general Pompey. Learn about the site’s historical significance as the location of the Serapeum, a temple dedicated to the god Serapis. The temple was destroyed in 391 AD during the rise of Christianity, and today, only the pillar and some tunnels remain. Citadel of Qaitbay
