The construction of the Grand Islamic mausoleum in Rabat took place from 1961 to 1971, shortly after the passing of King Mohammed V in 1961. This magnificent mausoleum was conceived by the Vietnamese architect Nguyen Viet Thu and brought to life by skilled Moroccan artisans and craftsmen. It showcases remarkable Islamic architectural elements and boasts intricate marble detailing. The tombs, crafted from white onyx, are located beneath a spacious dome.
In just 10 minutes, you'll arrive at the Hassan Tower, located next to the remains of an incomplete mosque. The construction of both the mosque and the tower commenced in the 12th century under the rule of the Almohad leader, Yacoub al-Mansour. The tower itself reaches a height of 44 meters (140 feet) and is adorned with intricate decorative elements, including calligraphic inscriptions and geometric patterns.
In approximately 15 minutes, we will arrive at a magnificent palace constructed in the 1980s during the rule of Sultan Mohammed IV, which serves as the official residence of the King of Morocco. This palace showcases traditional Moroccan architectural design, adorned with elaborate ironwork and intricate woodwork. While access to the interior of the palace is restricted to visitors, they are welcome to admire its exterior and the lush gardens in its vicinity. This site continues to hold significant cultural and historical importance in Rabat.
