Plaza de Armas

San José de Maipo was founded as a Villa by act of Don Ambrosio O'Higgins in 1792. The Governor of Chile and future Viceroy of Peru considered it necessary to give it the status of Villa as a way to support the mining operations that took place in the area of San Pedro Nolasco. In fact, in these mines there was an important production of silver, which was very important for the coffers of the Colony.

Tunel Ferroviario del Tinoco

The constructions that we can see in this place are declared historical heritage monuments, since they belong to the Puente Alto el Volcán railway, which formerly passed through here. The Tinoco tunnel is a great work of engineering carved into rock and has a length of more than 600 meters. It corresponds to a construction carried out for the transit of the Puente Alto-el Volcán railway. The train stopped working in 1985 and today the facilities are abandoned. The railway was inaugurated in 1914 to be able to transport the minerals extracted in the Valdés mines and which were then processed in the town of Volcán. The tunnel is located right in a complicated sector of the road to the Volcano, where you can only pass by one vehicle, in a yield of more than 500 meters. In the sector, continuous rolling occurs, especially with rains with high isotherm.
