Wander deeper into the heart of Japan with the JR East Pass (Nagano-Niigata Area) and travel to Nagano and Niigata, two prefectures known for some of the most breathtaking natural landscapes in the country. From the Haneda or Narita airports, hop on a shinkansen bullet train and head directly to the city of Nagano, home to the 1998 Winter Olympics. Famously known as ‘Japan’s Alps,’ Nagano features snow capped peaks, ski resorts, and beautiful temples. Alternatively, make your way to Kazuizawa, a famous resort town at the foot of an active volcano offering hot springs, golf courses, great cycling routes, skiing, and other outdoor recreation activities.

Head north to Niigata, a modern coastal city that’s the capital of the Niigata prefecture. Known for sake and outdoor activities, the city is also the gateway to Sado Island, a lovely island famous for its gold mining history, idyllic beaches, and hiking and diving opportunities.

  • This JR Pass is not applicable for express trains that start or end at Tobu Railway
  • This JR Pass is only valid for the Tobu Railway when the departure and/or destination is a JR line station

  • Please note that if you do not collect your reserved seat ticket by 9:00 pm on the day before your travel date, your seat reservation will be automatically canceled, and you will not be able to collect the ticket on the day of travel
  • Only 1 JR Pass can be used during your travel in Japan (if the validity period overlaps, you can't buy more than 1 JR Pass of the same type)
  • Children's age is determined by their age on the date of ticket purchase. Please present their passport for verification
  • Children aged under 6 do not need a pass if they don't take reserved seats

— JR East Rail Pass (Nagano & Niigata Area)—

  • Only tickets within 3 months are available for purchase 
  • Please refer to the official website for the pass coverage
  • A voucher will be sent via mail after the booking is confirmed. Please print your voucher with all the important information (name, reservation number, air ticket number) and present it for pass redemption
  • JR ticketing operates on a registration system. Please ensure sufficient information is provided while making a purchase, and bear in mind that we are not liable for any delays resulting from insufficient information on the passenger's part
  • Children will be required to purchase a child ticket under the following circumstances: 
    • Children requiring their own seat in a standard carriage (reserved seat)
    • Children travelling alone 
  • Travellers may reserve seats via the JR East Reservation site

    - Children under 5 years old: Free entry.
    - Children aged 6 but not yet enrolled in elementary school: Free entry.
    - Elementary school students aged 12 and under: Child ticket. 
    - High school students aged 18 and under: Teenager ticket. 
  • JR East Rail Pass (Nagano & Niigata Area)
    - Exclusively for non-Japanese tourists holding valid passports issued by a foreign government (A valid passport must be presented when purchasing, exchanging, and using the pass.)
    - The distinction between adults and children is based on the date of ticket purchase. Please confirm age information on your passport.
    - If a child under the age of 5 requires a reserved seat, a child's pass must be purchased.
  • Validity Periods
    1. E-Ticket: Valid for exchange into a physical ticket within 3 months from the date of issuance.
    2. JR East Rail Pass: Once exchanged, the pass is valid for 5 consecutive days starting from the start date.
    ※ During the exchange in Japan, a start date within one month must be specified.
  • Exchange Notes
    1. To exchange for the JR East Rail Pass, present the E-Ticket and your passport at a designated location in Japan. Photocopies of passports will not be accepted.
    2. During the exchange in Japan, a start date within one month must be specified. Exchange Notes Once exchanged, the start date cannot be changed.
    3. When exchanging multiple JR East passes of the same type, the start date of the new pass must not overlap with the validity period (5 days) of the previous pass. While different pass types (e.g., Tohoku vs. Nagano/Niigata) validity period can overlap.
    4. If eligibility requirements are not met, the E-Ticket cannot be exchanged for a pass. Refund requests must be made through the original travel agency.
  • After Exchange Notes
    1. Use the automatic ticket gates when entering and exiting stations.
    2. Lost passes cannot be reissued, even with proof of purchase such as the E-Ticket or receipt.
    3. Additional fares are required for travel beyond the validity area of the JR East rail pass.
  • Terms of Use
    1. Passes are for personal use only. Always carry your passport during the validity period and present it upon request by station staff.
    2. Once activated, the pass cannot be extended or refunded due to train cancellations, delays, or other reasons. Additional costs for travel plan changes (e.g., accommodation or transport) are not covered.

    1. Reserved seat tickets are required for Shinkansen or limited express trains. Free seating is available on local trains and certain Shinkansen/limited express trains. Some trains offer only reserved seating. Reserved seat tickets cannot be booked or changed onboard; they must be obtained at designated locations beforehand.
    2. Within the 5-day validity period, reserved seats on Shinkansen or limited express for unlimited number of times.
    3. Where to Get Reserved Seat Tickets:
    (1) Use ticket vending machines with reserved seat options in the JR East area. ※ Some passes cannot be used with vending machines, depending on the exchange point.
    (2) Obtain tickets at JR East "Midori no Madoguchi" ticket counters or JR EAST Travel Service Centers. ※ Non-JR East locations like Central Japan Railway, Tokyo Metro, Odakyu, or Keisei will not issue reserved seat tickets.
    4. Return unused reserved seat tickets to the nearest JR ticket office or JR EAST Travel Service Center before the train's departure if plans change
