The « Gâteau Nantais » is a specialty of Nantes from the 18th century. At the time of the triangular trade, Nantes sailors from the West Indies brought back new food : rum, cane sugar, vanilla, ... and all these flavors that characterize this cake. These new ingredients inspired a fouacier from Nantes who imagined a cake for sailors on long voyages
