It was erected to commemorate the landing of King-Emperor George V, the first British monarch to visit India, in December 1911. It was used as a symbolic ceremonial entrance to India for important colonial personnel. It is also the monument from where the last British troops left India in 1948, following Indian independence on 15th August 1947. It is located on the waterfront opposite the Hotel Taj Mahal Palace & overlooks the Arabian Sea. Today it is one of the main tourist attractions. It is a gathering spot for locals, tourists, street vendors, photographers. The boats to the famous Elephanta Island Caves start from here.
