The excavations of Pompeii and the remarkable state of preservation of the buildings give the imagine of a Roman city as a whole. That is the result of the peculiar burial (under a cover of ashes and lapilli 6 metres high) caused by the earthquake in 79 AD. Initially, excavations have revealed the area of Pompeii, a part of Ercolano Door, the Temple of Iside and a part of the theatres area. Walking the ancient streets, visitors can admire houses, workshops, the Foro, publics buildings, sacred sites, the baths, the theatres area and the amphitheatre. Out of the Doors of the city, there are four necropolises with the monumental tombs. Outside of the excavations area, there are the suburban residences, including the Villa dei Misteri. The evidences from Pompeii (furnishings, mosaics, paintings, statues) are preserved in the Antiquarium of Boscoreale and in the Archeological Museum of Naples. For its antiquity and its archeological importance, Pompeii is a Unesco World Heritage Site.
